In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My media product was a film opening called One Track Mind. It was a gritty realism film that me and my group thought of, planned and filmed. We produced a 3 minute opening of the film and tried to follow many conventions of other film openings we had seen and analysed.

Credits and titles

My film opening follows this convention however it does also challenge it as unlike other big films made by proper film companies, ours only involved 3 of us and we all did many of the same tasks, we therefore didn't have many credits so rather than doing many different titles and names we just wrote our names through the first part of the film.

The title being shown at some point of the opening after the credits is another convention of openings. Our film followed this convention as mid way through our 3 minute opening we show the title, One Track Mind on the screen. The font we used was quite big and plain as we thought that this made it stand out and easy readable and also the plain font fit our genre and story line better than a fancy handwritten one for example.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The man with OCD in my production represents a social group that are sympathised and felt sorry for, however this isn't always the case.
Some shots such as when we see an upset expression on his face after he realises he has killed someone leads us to feel sympathy towards him as even though he has done something bad, we can see how bad and sorry he feels.

However, some shots don't show this representation. Some shots lead us to see him as being a mad angry man looking to hurt someone as he is shown looking into his mirror with an angry expression on his face and then sat staring at the girl across the street. This can make us see his social group as being the horrible antagonist as at this point we feel scared for the young teenage girl he is watching and instead of sympathising for the man we are hoping the girl won't come to any harm.

The girl is the damsel in distress in the film and would represent the social group of young teenage girls. Young girls can be seen as a target and as being weak compared to males. This stereotype is represented in my film opening as she is walking alone and so is represented as being vulnerable compared to the man in the car.

What kind of media institutions might distribute your media product and why?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

This graph shows the ages of people going to cinemas between 2003 and 2013. As you can see, the age group who mostly go to the cinema to watch films are the 15-24 age group. They have been top over all of the years. The second top age group who go to the cinema at the moment are 25-34 year olds. This has changed over time and this age group are also consistently a lot lower on the graph compared to the 15-24 year olds. I therefore think that if our film were to get a lot of cinema viewings it would be best to direct it towards the 15-24 age group.

This is a table I have found from the BFI website showing the top films 15-24 year olds and 25-34 year olds went to see at the cinema in 2013. As you can see, many of them are very similar suggesting that both of these age groups like similar films. You can also see that there are a wide variety of genres from funny films such as The Hangover part 3 to more action films such as Fast & Furious 6. The idea that these two groups are interested in the same films and a wide variety lead me to think me film may appeal to both of them. 15-24 year olds who go to the cinema a lot would enjoy it as they like going to the cinema to see the latest films and I also believe 25-34 year olds would enjoy it as it has a mature, new and deep storyline which I believe they would enjoy and go to see.

I believe the target audience for my film would mainly be both boys and girls aged 18-25 however i believe people slightly younger and older than this would also enjoy it. This is Tom, he is 19 years old and is the typical target audience for my film. I believe this for the following reasons shown on the diagram...

How did you attract/ address your audience?

Flash Card Deck created by Emily Proctor with GoConqr

I also did a questionnaire as part of my research which allowed me to see what my target audience thought and liked about my idea. From this I got a lot of useful information that helped me make my film opening into something a young age group would like, as well as keeping it not to tailored so that a wider audience would also enjoy it.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Here are the technologies I have used...

I have learnt a lot about all of them, I have learnt many different features that the different programmes do and also more about how to use the camera and Macbook. They have also lead me to understand more about the importance of things such as getting the right lighting, clips and sounds in order to ensure everything is continuous and looks/ sounds good.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

When comparing my final video to my preliminary task it is clear to see that I have made a lot of improvement and learnt so much.
